Top 5 Career Mistakes
As Thanksgiving approaches, it is time to update our list of worst career decisions – The Big Turkeys.
5. Misplayed loyalty. People who stayed with companies out of loyalty but were still screwed over by their not-too-loyal bosses.
4. Misplaced trust. HR is not your friend if the big bully boss is also a big producer and a friend of the CEO.
3. It can’t happen to me. Many laid-off tech workers ignored the economic warning signs and/or company earnings reports.
2. Great miscalculation. Great Resignation employees found that the greener grass on the other side of the fence was over a septic tank.
1. I should have networked more. This is from the thousands of displaced workers in their late 40s and 50s who are struggling to find a new job.
3 Actions to Avoid Career Suicide
- Develop a career plan. I was with a group of career coaches recently. The consensus view is that today not having a plan is career suicide. Technology – automated AI — is dramatically changing the job market. Without a plan, you will suffer.
- Build a robust online profile emphasizing your successes. This will be necessary to be visible to recruiters, or more accurately, their automated applicant sourcing programs. Yes, you heard me. Computers are taking over. Without self-promotion you will become invisible.
- Build a professional network based on your career plan. If you do not people who are willing to introduce you to an organization, you will lose out.
The Elon Musk Myth
Having a fertile mind, with a record of creativity and innovation, is not an endorsement of good leadership. Elon Musk’s actions at Twitter, including his selection of the Twitter handle, Chief Twit, is proof positive. Yes, he is.
Do not be swayed by the media hype. The smartest guy in the room, is rarely the smartest guy or the best leader.

Navigating Your Career In an Automated Market
Today, learn how the changes that are occurring in talent acquisition will dramatically affect how you manage your career.
There are times when changes really do make a difference.
In the case of your career, it is automation and the expanding role artificial intelligence in candidate sourcing, screening and, eventually in your lifetime, the actual selection of who gets hired.
Before you disagree, think again about the exponential growth of technology, and the stunning pace of change in less than 10 years. The human touch in recruiting will diminish. That is why your professional network will play an outsized role in the success you achieve.
