Hope Is a Rotten Career Strategy

To advance your career in a time in which computers are making more applicant sourcing and screening decisions, the economy is slowing and the competition for the best jobs is intensifying, you must elevate your game.

Sitting back waiting to be recruited is a career fairy tale dream.

Here are four essential career management tactics.

  1. Build a robust professional network aligned with your career plan. Not doing this is akin to shooting yourself in the foot.
  2. Build your brand – deliver results and nurture relationships.
  3. Elevate your social media profile.  Ninety percent of recruiters are on LinkedIn every week.
  4. Update your emergency career preparedness plan. Be ready for the unexpected.

Please Don’t Settle for ‘Good Enough’

The phrase “good enough” for the job interview is BS when you are competing with dozens, even hundreds of other job seekers.

For most job applicants “good enough” reflects a belief they can show up, wow the interview team, and that is “good enough.”

Here is the thing:  good enough rarely is. Don’t be that applicant.

I know job interviewing and I can help you do a better job, to be more competitive.

Join us at 11:30 AM CDT today on YouTube and LinkedIn for our first live Lunch & Learn. Our focus: enhancing your performance in the job interview.

Are You Vulnerable to a Layoff?

The predicted layoff cycle has begun, according to Business Insider.

The cracks in the robust employment market begin to show earlier this year.  Now, according to Layoffs.fyi, the number is up to 40,000 and growing.

Workforce data provider Revelio Labs says if you are in one of these four groups, you may be at risk

  1. Recent hires.  Last in, first out.
  2. High earners.  If you profited from the Great Resignation, it is time to think about “what if.”
  3. Millennials.  This cohort represents 79 percent of the recent layoffs.
  4. Recruiters. This one is obvious

What can you do?  You need to get ready to go to market. It will be extremely competitive.

We can help you become the applicant everyone wants to hire.  Sign up for our interview course at JohnGSelf.Com.

Sometimes the direct, unfiltered comment is what you enjoy hearing:

“Aren’t you that old guy, the one with the gray hair who makes career advice videos?”

Yes, I am THAT guy with a TO-DIE-FOR career that is loaded with experience.

I know interviewing. From my days as a crime writer and investigative reporter on the mean streets of Houston to leading a global executive search practice, I have interviewed more people than most of the career coaches you see on social media.

I know what a good interview is, and I understand where most people stumble in the process.

I am not changing my hair color but I am happy to share my experience, here and my online courses at JohnGSelf.Com to help you enhance your interview skills and be more competitive for that dream job.
