Here are the four essential steps to building networking relationships.

  1. Develop a career plan.  Yes, it will change over time, but if you do not have a plan and a strategy, it is impossible to know who to target
  2. Develop selection criteria that are consistent with your plan: people who interest you, people with similar interests, those who live and work in cities, or for companies that match your plan.
  3. Add value to the connection – share articles, successful business initiatives, solutions, and innovations. Be selective. This is not about quantity but quality.
  4. Do not rush.  If you are suddenly unemployed and are only now building a network, you waited too long. A relationship is about developing mutual support and trust, and that takes time.
