Producer’s Note:  BusinessInsider featured a story on the games employers (and their recruiters) play regarding compensation on Tuesday. It is worth your time. BusinesasInsider.Compensation. Today’s GAM on the same subject, with a more direct assault on employer/recruiter sins, was originally distributed on July 26, 2021.

If you are frustrated with the talent acquisition process, you will love this story.

To save time today, let’s begin with the ending. The applicant was frustrated and angry when she blurted out:

“As my grandmother used to say, ‘Not only no, but hell no, uh uh.’ I cannot believe you wasted my time trying to recruit me for a position that pays less than I am making now.”

Yes, you guessed it. This applicant went through the recruiting process not knowing how much the position paid, and the recruiter never asked her current salary. As Theodore Roosevelt said, when you kick the person in the butt who has caused you the most grief, you probably will not be able to sit for a week. In this case, both parties deserve a swift kick.

So here is Self’s career rule one; If the recruiter doesn’t know the salary range or won’t tell you, then don’t waste your time. Walk away.
