Nobody likes getting bamboozled, especially when between jobs and money is tight. Unfortunately, this happens more frequently than most people realize.

Here are four questions you should ask before paying someone for a new resume.

  1. How widely used are ATS, the scanners that read and score your resume?  If they don’t know this, do not hire them.  Humans do not read more than 75 percent of all resumes.
  2. Do they believe in stylized or straightforward resumes?  The fancier the design, the more formatting will be required. That can cause problems for the ATS scanners. A plain text document is safer.
  3. Include your home address or not?  Hint: some older models of ATS will eliminate a resume without an address.
  4. How often will you have to customize your new, expensive resume?  Answer:  every time. Even if the employer does not use ATS, targeting your message is critical.
