Sell myself?

In a job interview?

Are you kidding me?

I’m no suck up!

Sucking up is what lazy people with limited skill, talent, and political savvy do. Even when sucking up is done well, it feels sleazy.

First, selling oneself in a job interview and sucking up is not the same thing.  Selling requires research, planning, strategy, and the ability to scan people and situations and respond accordingly.

Second, sucking up is what lazy people with limited skill, talent, and political savvy do. Even when sucking up is done well, it feels sleazy.

Third, that the best-qualified person gets the job only 30-35 percent of the time should set off alert bells.  You may learn a painful lesson if you are the best-qualified applicant and are not selling your value.

Fourth, you must differentiate your value from the dozens of other candidates. Waiting for the prospective employer to find out for themselves is a fool’s errand.

At the end of the interview, if you liked the people and the job, tell them.

That is not a suck-up.  That’s smart.
