In a tough job market where there are dozens if not hundreds of competitors for every job, you must do these four things to avoid being left on the sidelines, unemployed.

  1. When asked to tell the prospective employer about yourself, use a story that will illustrate your experience, your value and that you understand their needs.
  2. Remember, this recruitment is NOT about YOU.  Make it about the employer’s needs.
  3. Be clear and concise.  If you confuse, you lose. The applicant who gets the job will not necessarily be the best-qualified individual.  It will be the person who did the best job communicating their value.
  4. Close the deal.  Many applicants do a great job in the interview but then fail to deliver a concise and clear closing argument.  If you snooze you lose.
