Here are three rules you should always remember when dealing with recruiters – internal corporate headhunters or search firm consultants.
- Recruiters work hard to build and maintain credibility with their clients. Be transparent. If you are involved other searches, share that fact – no other details, just an honest heads up.
- Recruiters do not want to get blindsided at the last minute before they present you to the client. Do not go from telling them “I have nothing serious in the works” to “I’ve accepted another” offer without appropriate advance warning – as in days, not hours before you are scheduled to be presented.
- Remember the phrase “memory of an elephant.” Or “hell hath no fury like a recruiter scorned.” Some recruiters, including some well-known partners, are known to gossip at industry cocktail receptions.
