Thousands of executives and managers will flock to annual meetings and education forums through the spring and into the summer months.

Most will show up with a pocket full of business cards if they run into a former colleague or meet someone interesting at one of the breakout sessions or evening cocktail receptions.

That pretty much describes the traditional professional networking strategy for most American executives. They have no plan, and they made no preparations to target connections during their meetings.

That is why many of these executives and managers will fall short of their career and financial goals. Their comfort zone is giving bad advice that they can get by solely on the merits of their performance.

That is one of the great myths of career management and career advancement.

As the old saying goes, “It’s not what you don’t know that gets you into trouble; it’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so.”
