Today’s job market can be brutal. Millions of people remain out of work. New government spending may reignite the economy, but it will be tough sledding for the foreseeable future.
Here are three steps you can take to be more competitive:
- Understand your value. Many job seekers struggle to explain why a company should hire them. Most rely on talking about their experience. Experience is essential, but companies today are hiring people who can deliver results.
- At the core of your value are signature strengths – things you do very well. Do not wait for the employer to figure those out. Develop a message that emphasizes those strengths and your successes. Be clear about how you will – not can – but will add value to an organization.
- Communicate, communicate, communicate. If you want to get noticed, you must repeatedly communicate your value across social media as well as to targeted employers.
If you are waiting for someone to magically discover you, they probably won’t.
