When times are tough and people need help finding a job, you must meet them where they are, financially and emotionally.
When C-suite leaders lose their job, they frequently have the financial resources to buy the help they need, either the result of ample cash reserves or a generous severance agreement. That is not the case for lower-level personnel. All too often they are on their own. They convince themselves they really don’t need outside help with their job search because they simply cannot afford it.
I started getting telephone calls from people that had lost their jobs, the result of the devastating Covid-19 economic crisis. They really needed help but were afraid to spend money and decided to go it alone, a decision that research shows only delays the time it takes to find a new position.

Today the average job search lasts six to 14 months, depending on your industry and expertise. There are two primary reasons why it takes longer to find a job today:
- There are more than 15 million people currently looking for work while every week more than 850,000 new people file claims for unemployment.
- The job search rules have changed and employers and their recruiters did not make an announcement. This has produced an enormous amount of frustration.
There is reason to be optimistic, but it will take long hours and demanding work to overcome this career setback. That is the truth of it, but your work will be wasted if you do not adapt to the realities of today’s job market.
