Editor’s Note: JohnGSelf + Partners creates short video introductions for our full-service outplacement clients. The videos are used to introduce the candidate to corporate recruiters and search firm consultants.
“This is all about telling your story,” the video producer told the anxious executive minutes we began production on his introductory video bio that we plan to post to his LinkedIn profile and share with corporate recruiters and search firm consultants.
Instead of sending the traditional letter and a revised resume from outplacement consultants, they receive an email with the executive’s resume, a profile summary and the short video . Five years ago this would have been a little cheesy. Today it is smart strategy, an innovative way to differentiate yourself from competing executives but it must be professionally produced — homemade “selfies” could damage your brand.
It IS all about telling your story. Gone are the days when you tell people about yourself. Now you must sell people about your abilities and successes, and do it in a compelling, engaging manner.
With 20, 30 or more qualified candidates competing for the same job, what got you here in your career, won’t get you there*, to the next level, that next better job.
It is time to invest in your career by improving your storytelling skills. The job search is all about telling your story.
