You’ve lost your job. What are the next steps to finding your next better job?

  1. Grieve.  Losing a job, for whatever reason, can be emotionally traumatizing. Our job is part of our identity.  Take a few days, longer if you can afford the time, to process what has happened.  Looking for a new job is hard work.  You must be emotionally and mentally prepared for the upcoming roller coaster ride.
  2. Email your professional network.  Let them know you are re-entering the job market.  Ask for their assistance.  Many job seekers, embarrassed, do not do this because they do not want anyone to know. That is silliness. Your network is your career equity.  Now is the time to use it.  Companies rarely post the best jobs.  A colleague at another organization may open the door for you.
