Like most of you, I hate writing resumes.

With 27 years in executive search and seven years of career coaching, I can tell you what not to do. I can guide you and provide examples but hiring a resume writer who is up to date can be useful. Being up-to-date and certified are not necessarily the same thing.

Here are four things you should consider:

  1. Before you commit, understand your value, why a company should hire you. That will speed the process.
  2. Pick a resume writer who can write copy that sells your value.
  3. Do not pay for elaborate design. Less is more in today’s world of automated applicant scanning systems.
  4. Do not assume that the “optimized” resume they prepare will eliminate the need for some customization for each job you pursue. It won’t.
