America’s greatness is not because we had a long history extending to ancient times. No, we became great because we created a compelling narrative to tell our story – to explain who we are and what we believe.
As long as we kept telling that story, we had the confidence to be a welcoming nation, and those who came to America to make a better life for themselves helped make us a more robust, better place. But along the way, for a variety of reasons, we have abbreviated our story. In some cases, watered it down. In doing so, we seem to have lost some of our confidence.
