One of my favorite business personalities is Jay Samit, a business disrupter, serial entrepreneur, author, and investor. He has the unique ability to identify weak links in established businesses that can be exploited through innovation. Business disruption is a real risk to complacent executives who cling to a false sense of security. This is not a new phenomenon. Since the Fortune 500 list was first published in 1955, only about 60 of those companies survived.
So, why do people hold on to jobs they hate? Is it because they have convinced themselves their job is secure?
It is not job security. It is the illusion of job security that keeps people in those positions. About one-half of all today’s jobs will disappear over the next decade, Samit argues. Given the breathtaking speed of technological change, that prediction seems plausible.
