The New Yorker is, among many other things, famous for its cartoons.  In the Feb 12 edition, a man and a woman are sitting at a sidewalk café with cups of coffee.  The man looks up and says,

“Conversation?  I thought we were just meeting for coffee.”

And so it goes with our expectations and in our relationships – both in our personal and professional lives.  We assume a lot and are surprised when we are surprised.

That is one the constant trait of each generation.
