Anyone who has worked in healthcare for any period of time has heard about or read the stories — female patients molested in their rooms by “fake” doctors, warring gang factions
trying to finish the assassination job outside the trauma room, or nurses killing patients for God knows what reason.
Thankfully, these events are not an everyday occurrence, but a new Joint Commission alert indicates that crime – acts of violence in a place where people should be safe – is an increasingly problem for hospital leaders.
Since 2004, there have been “significant increases in reports of assault, rape, and homicide, with the greatest number of reports in the last three years,” the group said in its “Sentinel Event Alert” released last week.
This is an important report for healthcare leaders.
